Tras sostener una reunión con representantes de los alcaldes de 27 municipios rurales del país, el ministro de Agricultura, Esteban Valenzuela anunció la prórroga por tres meses más del decreto de emergencia agrícola en 231 comunas del país.
“Hemos decidido prolongar por tres meses, es decir, abril, mayo y junio, el decreto de emergencia agrícola y de sequía en 231 municipios del país, básicamente en la zona central, pero también (…) a municipios de la región de Aysén”, sostuvo el secretario de Estado tras la cita con ediles, quienes le entregaron una carta para solicitar reactivar decretos de emergencia ante sequía y escasez hídrica.
Asimismo, el ministro Valenzuela añadió que con la extensión “el ministerio de Agricultura y todos sus servicios haremos un esfuerzo de redireccionar recursos relevantes para trabajarlos con los municipios y que esto se encarne. Los municipios han aportado con el ministerio, forraje para la sobrevivencia de caprinos, ovinos, de ganadería y caballares en el país”. 
Cabe destacar que actualmente la emergencia agrícola rige en 9 regiones del país (Biobío, Ñuble, Coquimbo, Valparaíso, O´Higgins, Maule, Los Lagos, Aysén y 20 comunas de la Región Metropolitana), lo que permite una acción más rápida y oportuna de los distintos instrumentos económicos de apoyo.
En ese sentido, el subsecretario de la Agricultura, José Guajardo explicó que “se han ido incrementando los recursos para las emergencias agrícolas y estamos trabajando para que esos recursos sean importantes para cada una de las comunas. Estamos abiertos a trabajar en forma mancomunada con cada uno de los alcaldes y alcaldesas”.
Por otro lado, el alcalde de Zapallar y presidente de la Asociación de Municipios de Chile, Gustavo Alessandri, agradeció la reunión con el ministro “porque nos han escuchado y están dispuestos a trabajar con nosotros, que queremos llegar a todas las localidades de las distintas comunas con soluciones concretas. Sabemos la relevancia que tiene el agua, es un derecho fundamental y no puede existir un chileno en ninguna localidad que no tenga derecho a ella, por eso levantaremos programas y proyectos para tener solución a nuestros problemas”. 
En cuanto a la posibilidad de establecer Estado de Catástrofe en las regiones de Coquimbo, Valparaíso, Metropolitana, O’Higgins y El Maule como pidieron los alcaldes, el ministro Valenzuela puntualizó que esta es una medida que “se evalúa a nivel de gobierno en consulta entre distintos ministerios y que implica una serie de circunstancias. Hay que ser prudentes y evaluarlos”.
Los alcaldes presentes durante la jornada fueron Claudia Adasme (Papudo), Gustavo Alessandri (Zapallar), Williams Arévalo (Santa Cruz), Óscar Calderón (Quillota), Emilio Cerda (San Pedro), Jorge Elías (Olmué), Dino Lotito (Santo Domingo), Marcos Morales (Puchuncaví), Daniel Morales (Limache), Filomena Navia (La Cruz), Margarita Osorio (Nogales) y Mauricio Quiroz (Putaendo).
